Draft: This page is a draft: we have not read Trupanion's Florida rate pages yet, so it has no price and only partial scores. Figures may be corrected; see the history.

Trupanion is administered by Trupanion Managers USA, Inc. and underwritten in Florida by American Pet Insurance Company.

Coverage

APIC is the only Trupanion underwriter with Florida filings; ZPIC Insurance Company has none. Rate filings 26-021862 (in force from 1 September 2026) and 26-035528 (from 2 January 2027) are approved, but their rate pages were not obtained. Forms filings 26-018769 and 26-018771 (approved 13 May 2026, effective 1 September 2026) contain Florida Amendatory Endorsements TRU (D) 00006 FL and TRU (C) 00006 FL and Insurer Disclosure TRU (D) 00012 FL. Disclosure version V01.202309 says new policyholders have no waiting periods, but coverage starts after a delay from enrollment unless the pet is enrolled under the exam-day offer. The length of that delay is not known, so waiting days, enrollment ages and coverage flags are left blank.

Scores in Florida

Without rate pages there is no lifetime cost, so Trupanion is not ranked in Florida. Scales with data:

A. Lifetime costno data
B. Age curveno data
C. Generosity (loss ratio)no data
D. Rate increasesno data
E. Price structure8.0
F. Customer treatmentno data
Coverage (separate)no data

Why these scores

D. Rate increases no data
Not scored: no Florida APIC rate filing has a documented percentage. Insurify reported +12.9% for Trupanion (+24% accident and illness, +35.6% accident-only) for an approval effective 1 February 2026, which research notes tie to filing 25-043052; the article is not among our sources and the filing documents were not obtained. The changes in the later approved filings 25-055797 (from 2 July 2026) and 26-021862 (from 1 September 2026) are unknown, and there are no Florida customer dislocation data.
E. Price structure 8.0
Florida rate pages for APIC filings 26-021862 and 26-035528 were not obtained; Trupanion says prices do not rise for age or for claims, it offers no multi-pet discount, and its website quote expires at midnight Pacific time on the day it is issued.
F. Customer treatment no data
No Florida non-renewal or penalty data were found; in California, APIC reported 0 policies non-renewed in 2024 (filing 25-2461). That filing's countrywide expense data list fines and penalties of $11,159 (2022), $142,836 (2023) and $17,381 (2024) without naming a regulator or a reason; the regulator documents we have read contain no fine against APIC. Maine docket INS-23-800 (2023) was a disapproval of an APIC policy form, appealed by the company, not a penalty.

The percentages are not from the filing documents, which were not obtained, but from an Insurify report of the Florida approval effective 1 February 2026, which the research notes attribute to this filing: Trupanion rates +12.9%, accident and illness +24%, accident-only +35.6%, more than 3,200 policyholders affected, 1,618 of them on Trupanion for Chewy. No figure is recorded as the approved change: the Insurify article is not among the sources, and it is unclear which of the three figures applies to the filing as a whole. History

  1. Added how Trupanion sets prices (71% payout target, age locked at enrollment, the actuary's premium trend), the full California rate history since 2017, retention and revenue per pet from the 2025 10-K, the 2024 shareholder letter, and the list of Florida filings; linked the new case on the locked age factor
  2. Corrected the policyholder count to one figure, 94,327 from the summary of filing 25-2461 (its dislocation exhibit totals 94,326); stated that the nine increases since 2017 compound to +294.9%; named the California Department of Insurance as the source of the 19.0% indication
  3. Florida: no longer show Insurify's +12.9% as the approved change in filing 25-043052, since it does not come from the filing and its attribution is uncertain; added APIC filings 24-108678 (informational) and 26-021802 (withdrawn) to the Florida list; added BBB and Trustpilot ratings checked on 13 October 2026
  4. Corrected the 2026 California increase to the approved +19.0% (the company had asked for +28.1%); noted that the filing's customer-dislocation counts were computed for the original request, not the approved change; noted that $195.71 excludes the Recovery and Complementary Care rider and that the manual has an 8.33% first-year discount under the exam-day offer; dated the loss ratio to the year ending 30 September 2025
  5. First published from California filing 25-2461 and the Florida OIR list of APIC filings
