Trupanion Pet Insurance New Jersey Review
Trupanion is administered by Trupanion Managers USA, Inc. and underwritten in New Jersey by American Pet Insurance Company.
Coverage
The state regulator lists Trupanion under American Pet Insurance Company. Trupanion publishes state notices and insurer disclosures for 15 other states, but not yet for New Jersey. From the New Jersey filings in SERFF (APII-134748612, APII-134810258): a rate increase of +24.4% on average was approved on 5 October 2026, effective 31 October, after Trupanion asked for +41%; renewals are capped at 25% and the rest carried over. The price is set by age at enrollment, for dogs and cats under 14. The form filed for the 2027 law (not yet approved) replaces waiting periods with a 12-day deferral when nothing is covered, accidents included (today: 5 days for injuries, 30 for illness); drops the promise to change the price no more than once in 12 months; lets Trupanion deny a claim if it cannot get the vet records; and gives 30 days, not the 30 business days the law requires, to return the policy.

History
- Added how Trupanion sets prices (71% payout target, age locked at enrollment, the actuary's premium trend), the full California rate history since 2017, retention and revenue per pet from the 2025 10-K, the 2024 shareholder letter, and the list of Florida filings; linked the new case on the locked age factor
- Corrected the policyholder count to one figure, 94,327 from the summary of filing 25-2461 (its dislocation exhibit totals 94,326); stated that the nine increases since 2017 compound to +294.9%; named the California Department of Insurance as the source of the 19.0% indication
- Florida: no longer show Insurify's +12.9% as the approved change in filing 25-043052, since it does not come from the filing and its attribution is uncertain; added APIC filings 24-108678 (informational) and 26-021802 (withdrawn) to the Florida list; added BBB and Trustpilot ratings checked on 13 October 2026
- Corrected the 2026 California increase to the approved +19.0% (the company had asked for +28.1%); noted that the filing's customer-dislocation counts were computed for the original request, not the approved change; noted that $195.71 excludes the Recovery and Complementary Care rider and that the manual has an 8.33% first-year discount under the exam-day offer; dated the loss ratio to the year ending 30 September 2025
- First published from California filing 25-2461 and the Florida OIR list of APIC filings
